Open 365 days a year, San Francisco Zoo & Gardens is home to more than 1,500 exotic, endangered and rescued animals on 100 acres of majestic habitats and peaceful gardens along the Pacific Ocean coast. During your visit to the Zoo, you’ll travel the world through themed areas, observing diverse wildlife from African lions to Australian koalas to California tiger salamanders. With amphibians, birds, invertebrates, mammals, reptiles, and native plant species, the Zoo spans the amazing variety of life on Earth.

Highlights

    Experience the dramatic 3-acre mixed-species African Savanna, where giraffes, zebras and ostriches live together, and see a variety of African birds at the African Aviary.

    Journey to the rugged regions of North America and come nose-to-nose with the Zoo’s beloved female grizzly bears, Kachina and Kiona, in an expansive habitat. At 1 acre, Hearst Grizzly Gulch is one of the largest naturalistic environments dedicated to grizzly bears in any zoo, with a sunny meadow, 20,000-gallon pool, and climbing rocks.

    Stroll the elevated boardwalk at Lemur Forest for great views of lemurs leaping through the trees. The exhibit is the largest outdoor multi-species lemur habitat in the country.

Tips

The best time to visit is in the morning. To get the full experience, allow about two and a half hours for your visit.

Children ages 14 and under must be accompanied by an adult while on Zoo grounds.

Dentzel Carousel

Ride a horse, a cat, a rabbit, or even a giraffe on the restored historic 1921 Dentzel Carousel located near the Exploration Zone. Tickets are $4 per person and can be purchased onsite; adults ride free when standing by a paid child.

Wild Explorer Virtual Reality Film Adventure

The Wild Explorer Virtual Reality (VR) Theater will transport you from San Francisco Zoo’s VR Zone to the high-elevation forests of Rwanda and change the way you view animal conservation! Tickets cost $9 and can be purchased at the theater entrance near the Exploration Zone.

VIP Savanna Tour

Take an informative and exciting guided walking tour through the Leanne B. Roberts African Savanna. Learn about the animals and conservation efforts, and feed a giraffe along the way! The included VIP wristband entitles you to discounts on food, beverages, and a gift shop item plus a free carousel ride (restrictions apply). Tickets cost $35 adult and $10 ages 3-7 (2 and under free) and can be purchased at the main ticket window (subject to availability).

My granddaughter and I ran into timing issues and were unable to use the reservation we had made for one of the attractions. The customer service was excellent and my granddaughter was thrilled that we were able to enjoy the Exploratorium after all.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great trip, but wish Alcatraz had been an option I went to San Francisco in September 2024 to try the Giants stadium, and chose the California Academy of Sciences, SFMOMA, the Blue & Gold Fleet Cruise, and the Disney Museum as my four options for the four item pass. I really enjoyed all four of them. That said, I wish Alcatraz had been an option back then. I'm glad it is now. We passed it on the cruise, but I would have enjoyed exploring the island. I also wish DeYoung was an option for the four destination pass. I particularly liked the sea lions at Pier 39 at the Blue and Gold Fleet Cruise and passing Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge, the polka dot room at the SFMOMA, and the rainforest and endangered species paintings at the CAS. Overall, I loved SF, can't wait to be back, and would get a CityPASS again.
