Construction began on the tower in 1966 and was completed in 1968. San Antonio architect O'Neil Ford designed it in preparation for the 1968 World's Fair, also known as the HemisFair '68, which also happened to be held on the 250th anniversary of the founding of San Antonio. The 750-foot-tall Tower of the Americas was the country's tallest observation tower when it was first unveiled. It held that position until the Stratosphere Tower in Las Vegas was completed in 1996.
