Chicago CityPASS

posted by Lindsay on May-16-2012

I am very glad that we purchased CityPASS. It is a great value for your money, as you get to see everything that each attraction has to offer. It was great to pass the lines. The Aquarium line was very long, I'd say well over an hour wait, and we got to go right in. It's well worth it. I have no complaints and would recommend everyone who wants to get the best experience of Chicago to get CityPASS.

Worth of money

Skydeck and John Hancock Observatory were great. We took our booklets at Skydeck and skipped lines. Shedd aquarium was fantastic. Did not like Adler planetarium but Field museum was amazing. You can find anything you want in it. It takes a whole day and you can see every exhibition in the museum by your citypass for free.

Overall Great Savings, but be aware that .......

posted by Katherine on May-09-2012

Just returned from Chicago with my 9 year old.......Overall this is a great deal and you can skip to head of the line at most attractions ( great time saver), but beware of two things.....1) Art Institute is already free for kids, only advantage here was that you get a complimentary headset with the child's Chicago pass. Also, I had to wait in line there to exchange our Chicago passes for an entrance ticket. That took 25 minutes. That being said, the Art Institute was fantastic, and very much worth it. There is some construction currently and a long walk to the Chagall Windows, just FYI. 2) MythBusters, the current special exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry, was an extra cost which was not included in the Chicago Pass, and when I tried to purchase that exhibit only online before our trip, I was not able to do so. They had only the option of purchasing general admission + Mythbusters exhibit. The reason to do so ahead of time is to make sure you get the entrance time you want and don't have to wait around for the time they have open. It worked out for us that we got right into it within a 1/2 hour of arriving at the museum, but by then the school crowds had arrived and it was a bit of a letdown waiting for each experiment and getting ditched in line a lot. There are A LOT of school groups. Get to museums early, if at all possible! We went to the Shedd at 9 am, right when it opened, and we had an hour of noise-free and line-free museum time which was great! This pass motivated us to do all of these attractions. Honestly, if it weren't for the pass, we wouldn't have done all that we did while we there. Look at back of booklet, too. There are additional percentages off food courts/gift stores and Bloomingdale's!

My visit to Chicago in April was my first experience in that city and I got to see so many wonderful sights while there. The City Pass was really worth the money and because my time was limited I got to pick out the best of the best! I highly recommend the City Pass

FAQs

Find answers to questions most frequently asked about Chicago CityPASS below. Click on the questions to show or hide answers.

  1. How do I know if Chicago CityPASS is a good deal for me?

You'd get your money's worth even if you only visited three attractions. We invite you to see for yourself. Price Details displays CityPASS prices right next to full attraction admission prices and the extras you get with CityPASS. You can tell at a glance if the price and value are right for you — even if you don't visit every attraction.

  2. When does the 9-day booklet validity period begin?

If you purchase today, you may begin using your booklet any day from now until February 28, 2014. Exchange vouchers for your CityPASS booklet within 6 months from date-of-purchase.

Chicago CityPASS tickets are valid for one-time use within nine consecutive calendar days. The first attraction you visit stamps or scans your booklet to activate the booklet's nine-day validity period. For example, if you visit the Adler Planetarium on Monday, you have the rest of that day, plus the following eight days to use the other four tickets in your booklet.

  3. Are there ever any blackout dates for using CityPASS?

No, there are no black-out dates associated with using CityPASS. You're welcome use your CityPASS anytime within regular attraction operating hours. Please note that some attractions may periodically close all or a portion of their attraction for private events or due to weather conditions. We recommend contacting the attractions directly to verify availability during your travel dates.

  4. What is an option ticket?

Chicago CityPASS includes two option tickets. One gives you the choice to visit either Adler Planetarium OR Art Institute of Chicago. The other gives you the choice to visit either John Hancock Observatory OR Museum of Science and Industry. No need to decide between them now – choose when you get there.

Don't miss this - your booklet contains a coupon for a special CityPASS savings to use at the attraction you don't visit using your option ticket.

  5. What do I do if my child is younger than the CityPASS child ticket price range?

Chicago child booklets are priced for ages 3-11. Children under age 3 may be eligible for free or discounted admission at some attractions, however, you are often required to stand in line with them to secure a free child’s ticket. You may save money, but you will spend time in ticket lines.

See Price Details to decide whether CityPASS is a good choice for your child. Your family’s vacation experience may be improved by zipping past main ticket lines to the CityPASS entrance — even if it costs you a few extra dollars.

  6. What is a voucher and how do I use it?

A voucher is a one-page document that you print at the time of purchase or later by accessing the .pdf attached to your e-mailed order receipt. All vouchers must be printed; attractions will not accept an on-screen view of your voucher, using your mobile device. (At check out, you also have the option to have actual booklets shipped to you by UPS.)

Once printed, you take the pre-paid voucher to the first attraction you plan to visit and exchange it for a CityPASS booklet which contains entrance tickets to all the attractions. Exchange locations at each attraction are printed on the voucher. Keep in mind that you may encounter a ticket line when exchanging your voucher.

  7. Do I skip every line with Chicago CityPASS?

Chicago attractions offer Express VIP entry for CityPASS holders. The Skip the Lines tab tells you how to enter each attraction with a CityPASS booklet in hand and with a voucher to — if possible — avoid the main ticket line. In the summer, weekends, and on holidays, even the CityPASS holders line may fill up, but you'll move much more quickly than guests waiting in regular ticket lines. You'll have to pass security at both Skydeck Chicago and the John Hancock Observatory security points. In our experience, these lines also move briskly when you use CityPASS.

  8. How do I know when attractions open/close and where I should start?

Planning is easier when you see all the attractions' locations and hours in one place. Click on Attraction Details to find the Location & Hours tab and more attraction information tabs designed to help you plan your trip.

  9. Do I need to make reservations for Omnimax shows at the Museum of Science and Industry?

Chicago CityPASS' Museum of Science and Industry ticket includes admission to an Omnimax theatre presentation. Reservations are not required. When you arrive at the CityPASS counter, museum staff will assign a timed Omnimax ticket. For current show information: Details

  12. Adler Planetarium admission includes a planetarium show. Which one do I get?
