Mobile Device Tour

Making Sense of Modern Art Mobile

From the museum that brought you the first-ever multimedia gallery tour comes an entirely new way to explore SFMOMA's extraordinary collection: A handheld touchscreen device.

Get up close and personal with the paintings, sculptures, and photographs you thought you knew via interviews with artists, curators, scholars and storytellers; video footage; poems; and music.

Free with the deposit of a driver's license or valid state ID. Pick one up in the Haas Atrium. Available in English, with selected stops in French, German, and Spanish.

Art in the Atrium

Art in the Atrium: Kerry James Marshall

Specially commissioned for SFMOMA, Kerry James Marshall's monumental murals depict Mount Vernon and Monticello, the estates of American presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Marshall's paintings stand apart from other such paintings by incorporating images of the slaves who supported plantation life.

At first glance, optical tricks conceal them from view, but visitors who engage in the artist's visual game will discover figures so often omitted from representations of American history.

Caffé Museo and Rooftop Coffee Bar

Caffé Museo and Rooftop Coffee Bar

Caffè Museo serves an inventive menu of Italian-inspired dishes made from fresh, local ingredients and organic produce. At ground level, adjacent to the museum's entrance on Third Street, the café offers an espresso bar, indoor and outdoor seating, and a selection of wines by the glass.

  • The Rooftop Coffee Bar serves coffees, teas, refreshing drinks, as well as sweet and savory treats crafted by San Francisco's beloved Blue Bottle Coffee Company, renowned for its artisan micro-roasting process and dedication to the finest certified organic coffees.

  • Special Events

    Daily Special Events

SFMOMA's critically acclaimed exhibitions are just the tip of the iceberg. A wide range of ongoing special events (such as film screenings, tours, live performances, book signings, and talks given by artists and curators) are on offer nearly every day — many of them free with museum admission.

    Yerba Buena

    Yerba Buena Gardens Cultural District

SFMOMA is the centerpiece of San Francisco's flourishing Yerba Buena Gardens cultural district.

Enjoy a stroll around expertly manicured gardens with plants representing each of San Francisco's sister cities, while you take in a partial view of the downtown skyline.

A Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial is located within the park behind a waterfall, which is the largest fountain on the West Coast. The memorial consists of large, etched glass excerpts of King's speeches.

    Katharina Wulff

    Katharina Wulff

    April 13-Sept. 4, 2012

Imbued with whimsy and gloom, vulnerability and strength, Katharina Wulff's figurative paintings blend myriad art historical styles, depicting imaginary, far-off locales often populated by strange animals and alluring visages. This latest installment of our New Work series — the artist's first solo exhibition in the United States as well as the first time her work has been shown on the West Coast — features a selection of paintings made over the last five years, along with several new works.

    Parra: Weirded Out

    Parra: Weirded Out

    March 31-July 29, 2012

With its vibrant color, curvaceous lines, and eccentric, distinctive imagery, the bold and playful work of Dutch graphic artist Parra has garnered a substantial cult following since it first appeared in the 1990s. Parra's cartoonlike, hybridized characters and free-form typography have become iconic, while his hand-drawn approach to graphic design has landed him high-profile collaborations with companies like Nike and InCase.

You need at least 2-3 WHOLE days to get advantage of this pass

    posted by Dania on May-06-2012

It was worth it, my family and myself enjoy it, one day we took the cruise trip, later the muni ( cable car transport, you have to make line, even with your city pass) starting at the embarcadero, final end it's at the union square where all the stores and restaurants are located. Next we went to SFMOMA (museum). Since they close at 5, we couldn't see another museum. On another day I visit the academy of science museum, it is divided in 3: the planetarium( like the one we have in Tijuana, Mexico CECUT but smaller) , aquarium (pretty big and amazing) and tropical forest ( it really has the temperature of the tropical area, I was sweating).

Made My Trip Fantastic and Would Highly Recommend.

    posted by Erica on May-05-2012

My boyfriend and I were in San Francisco for 5 days. As both of us are students we were initially interested in the CityPASS because of the money saving aspect. The CityPASS provided us with lots to do while we were in town, and made transit really easy. It simplified the choices of what to see, and we saw some things that we definitely would have missed out on if we had not had the CityPASS. The fact that we could use it as a pass on the cable cars was an added bonus. I would definitely recommend this to other travelers.

City Pass - What a Fun Way to see San Francisco!

posted by Ardis Bartle on May-03-2012

I purchased the pass for the MOMA, De Young and California Sciences. Imagine how much fun it became when I could get on any cable car or MUNI bus and go to Pier 39 for the wonderful boat ride and aquarium. It was nice being a tourist as well as an art lover in San Francisco! Well done!

    Simplified Access to Public Transportation

posted by Brian W on Apr-30-2012

CityPass not only saved us money on seeing the city's main attractions, it simplified the use and cost of accessing the cable cars and Muni transportation system. We got on/off the cable cars and trolleys as often as we wanted and never had to worry about having exact chnage.

    FAQs

Find answers to questions most frequently asked about San Francisco CityPASS below. Click on the questions to show or hide answers.

    1. How do I know if San Francisco CityPASS is a good deal for me?

You'd get your money's worth even if you only visited three attractions. We invite you to see for yourself. Price Details displays CityPASS prices right next to full attraction admission prices and the extras you get with CityPASS. You can tell at a glance if the price and value are right for you — even if you don't visit every attraction.

    2. If I want an Alcatraz tour, how do I get it with CityPASS?

We offer an Alcatraz Option. Purchase San Francisco CityPASS directly from Alcatraz Cruises by calling (415) 981‑7625 – or buy at their ticket booth in San Francisco.

Note: The Alcatraz tour will replace the CityPASS booklet’s Blue & Gold Fleet Bay Cruise ticket. The Blue & Gold ticket will be removed from your booklet; you will not be eligible for a bay cruise.

    3. When does the 9‑day validity period begin?

If you purchase today, you may begin using your booklet any day from now until February 28, 2014. Exchange vouchers for your CityPASS booklet within 6 months from date-of-purchase.

San Francisco CityPASS tickets are valid for one‑time use within nine consecutive calendar days. The first attraction you visit stamps or scans your booklet to activate the booklet's nine‑day validity period. For example, if you visit the Adler Planetarium on Monday, you have the rest of that day, plus the following eight days to use the other four tickets in your booklet.

Your booklet serves as your 7‑day Muni passport starting the day it is activated.

    4. Are there ever any blackout dates for using CityPASS?

No, there are no black-out dates associated with using CityPASS. You're welcome use your CityPASS anytime within regular attraction operating hours. Please note that some attractions may periodically close all or a portion of their attraction for private events or due to weather conditions. We recommend contacting the attractions directly to verify availability during your travel dates.

    5. What is an option ticket?

San Francisco CityPASS includes one option ticket that gives you the choice to visit either de Young & Legion of Honor Fine Arts Museums OR Exploratorium. No need to decide between them now – choose when you get there.

Don't miss this - your booklet contains a coupon for a special CityPASS savings to use at the attraction you don't visit using your option ticket.

    6. What do I do if my child is younger than the CityPASS child ticket price range?

San Francisco child booklets are priced for ages 5‑12. Children under age 5 may be eligible for free or discounted admission at some attractions, however, you are often required to stand in line with them to secure a free child’s ticket. You may save money, but you will spend time in ticket lines.

See Price Details to decide whether CityPASS is a good choice for your child. Your family’s vacation experience may be improved by zipping past main ticket lines to the CityPASS entrance — even if it costs you a few extra dollars.

    7. What is a voucher and how do I use it?

A voucher is a one-page document that you print at the time of purchase or later by accessing the .pdf attached to your e-mailed order receipt. All vouchers must be printed; attractions will not accept an on-screen view of your voucher, using your mobile device. (At check out, you also have the option to have actual booklets shipped to you by UPS.)

Once printed, you take the pre-paid voucher to the first attraction you plan to visit and exchange it for a CityPASS booklet which contains entrance tickets to all the attractions. Exchange locations at each attraction are printed on the voucher. Keep in mind that you may encounter a ticket line when exchanging your voucher.

    8. May I redeem my voucher at a Muni kiosk or by presenting to cable car, trolley or bus drivers?

San Francisco CityPASS print‑at‑home vouchers must be exchanged at one of the CityPASS attractions, or at the San Francisco Visitors Bureau at 900 Market Street for a booklet prior to use aboard Muni vehicles.

    9. Do I skip every line with San Francisco CityPASS?

The Skip the Lines tab tells you how to enter each attraction with a CityPASS booklet in hand and with a voucher to — if possible — avoid the main ticket line. We've also printed brief instructions on each ticket in your booklet to remind you where to go. Also, each attraction displays signs indicating where CityPASS ticket holders go to present their ticket booklets to avoid most entrance ticket lines. Keep in mind that these are the most-popular attractions in San Francisco and there may be lines in summer, on weekends and holidays.

    10. How do I know when attractions open/close and where I should start?

Planning is easier when you see all the attractions' locations and hours in one place. Click on Attraction Details to find the Location & Hours tab and more attraction information tabs designed to help you plan your trip.

    11. How do I buy a CityPASS if I live outside the U.S., Canada or U.K.?
