The San Diego Zoo is a winter paradise with weird faces
There are so many satisfying reasons to visit the San Diego Zoo. Few places are more life-affirming and inspiring than the zoo, dedicated to the conservation of endangered species and habitats. You’ll see for yourself when you visit it and the other, contrasting parks in a Southern California CityPass. Winter is a spectacular season to explore the zoo. A typical San Diego weather forecast begins with, “It’ll be 72-degrees and sunny today.” Take your preschoolers. There are fewer people around you to obstruct your views. The animals are more active throughout the day, so you’re much more likely to get a close-up of the most fascinating creatures on the planet. You’ll find the zoo is also a world-class botanical garden, with habitats that make animals feel at home. San Diego’s mild Mediterranean climate makes growing 700,000 plants – on 100 acres – possible. The flats, mesas and canyon contours are lush with plants planted over the past 92 years. Tiger River exhibit simulates an Asian rain forest, its mist hovering amid tropical trees, vines and flowers. Beautiful, striped Malayan tigers practice their stalking, chasing and pouncing technique amid the tall, camouflaging grasses. Buddha, the new sloth bear, can be found suctioning up ants with his Nature-designed mouth. Zhen Zhen, a one-year-old giant panda cub will soon be weaned from her mother; this is a good time to see her with her mom for the last time. And a sweet-hearted eight-month-old joey koala gets a name during Koalapalooza, January 16-19, 2009. The heart of Gorilla Tropics is the gorillas’ habitat. These vegetarian giants live amid waterfalls, meadow and climbing area. Don’t be surprised to find yourself face to face with one or two at the viewing window. They love to people watch. Nearby are bonobos, known as pygmy chimps. They’re quite possibly the most intelligent primates on Earth, and they are wildly fun-loving. These are just a few examples. There are hundreds of fabulous faces, beaks, snouts, horns, and fine feathers to admire. Kids can climb, run, ogle, question, snack, and fill their minds and hearts with the experience of examining their fellow creatures and where and how they live. It is a remarkable way to begin a new year. The zoo also manages the 1,800-acre San Diego Zoo’s Wild Animal Park.
