CityPass Tips When Traveling with Kids
- Visit zoos and aquariums when the doors open. You’re fresh. Parking is better. Animals are active.
- Go left. Most people tend to go to the right. Begin in the opposite direction; an early start will give you more of the attraction to yourself.
- Break for lunch at the art museum. Many museums give you a choice of a quick bite – or a more leisurely, civilized break in the day.
- Science museums in the afternoon -- when energetic, hands-on exhibits ignite energy and imagination. School field trips have thinned out for the day.
- Seek eye-level views. Be prepared to lift shorter kids. They need to look through telescopes, see pictures, animals, and exhibits.
- Check out attractions online. Know before you go. Which exhibits will appeal to your child? Head there first.
- Pack a snack. Many attractions have courtyards, picnic spots, or are near a park. Manage sugar/salt/costs with your own water and baggies of snacks.
- Elevator buttons and hand dryers. Amazing how the things kids experience least in daily life grab their attention. Escalators. Pushing the buttons in the elevator. Super-power hand dryers in the bathroom. Taxis. Enjoy.
- Call it a day. Know when to stop. Little people are likely at their limits by museum-closing time. Book a family-friendly hotel with a pool. Feel free to just watch as they splash.
- Polish modern skills. Practice reading signs. Map-reading. Sending a text message to friends and family. Checking weather reports from the breakfast table. Focus a camera.
- Take public transportation. It could easily be the day’s high point. The views between attractions – people, buildings, traffic – reveal the city between attractions.
- Take your CityPass booklet cover and maps home for use in a vacation scrapbook.
- Gift shops often have just the thing for a great school presentation.
