San Francisco’s beloved California Academy of Sciences returns

San Francisco CityPass once again includes admission to the California Academy of Sciences. The museum, in its magnificent new building, will be on everyone’s must-see list.

Located directly across from the new de Young museum -- another CityPass attraction -- the new sciences academy is remarkable for many reasons. Its living roof appears to have been lifted from the landscape, and the museum slid underneath. Cal Academy is the “greenest” museum ever constructed. What does that mean? In a nutshell, within the 2.5 acre roof are 1.7 million native plants, and the mechanisms to conserve water, produce a portion of the Academy’s energy needs, and be a wildlife habitat.

Wait until you see inside! There’s a rainforest, state-of-the-art planetarium, aquarium, and natural history museum. Nowhere else will you find more fascinating, comprehensive ways to be transported across the planet and into space with exhibitions and experiences that explore, explain, and protect our living world.

Field scientists’ research plays a huge role in bringing animals and eco-systems up close. They’re studying all the time, sharing their knowledge, facts, and passion for the natural world. Cal Academy has 20 million specimens and 40,000 live animals.

Cal Academy is a favorite among San Franciscans. It was founded during the Gold Rush and has long been a point of pride, and a place to take friends and family. Its former building was damaged during an earthquake. Now relocated and reinvented, beloved features have been reinstated in the revolutionary new building. Locals will spot African Hall, the swamp and the pendulum, while future generations will simply relish science in all its spellbinding, integrated aspects.

Make your own discoveries and pick your favorite parts, whether in the stars, the sea or land. Delve into the habits of moray eels (watch out for those teeth), penguins, and butterflies, examine the world’s largest coral reef display, and enjoy the solar system via digital game technology in the planetarium. Programming throughout the museum is designed to appeal to varying age levels.
