Surf's Up in So Cal

Does surfing call to mind hip youngsters with sun-bleached hair and too much time on their hands? Or big-wave daredevils with an apparently malfunctioning fear factor? Actually, much like mid-life professionals on Harleys, a surprising number of surfers take up the sport long after they’ve left their wild years behind. If the thought of hanging 10 has always appealed to you, Southern California’s more than 300 miles of sunny coastline make the perfect place to bring that dream to life. Anyone who’s reasonably fit and can confidently swim in the ocean can learn to surf. Schools up and down the coast offer instruction for surfers of all ages and abilities, and the wave options range from mildly thrilling to seriously intense. read more »

Baby Giant Panda is San Diego Zoo’s “Little Gift”

And the latest is a very special “one.” On July 29, 2012, Bai Yun gave birth to her sixth offspring at the San Diego Zoo. Not only is Bai Yun one of the most prolific panda mamas in the world; now, with the arrival of her latest cub, that birth marks the San Diego Zoo as the site for the most giant pandas born at a breeding facility outside of China. read more »

Checking in with Haunted Hotels

One might think that having a haunted hotel would be something to hush, but across the country, many hoteliers are making their resident apparitions a part of their marketing pitch. San Diego’s splendid Victorian beachfront Hotel del Coronado is heralded as one of the country’s best beach resorts on the best beach. It features amazing brunches, memorable wedding celebrations and it has a 120-year history of entertaining the country’s most legendary stars, from Charles Lindbergh to Marilyn Monroe. But the Hotel del Coronado also entertains another guest, a long-time specter, Kate Morgan. She was a beautiful young woman who checked into the hotel in 1892 and spent five lonely days waiting for a man who never arrived. Kate was found dead on an exterior staircase leading to the beach with a gunshot wound to her head. read more »

Stars of the Show: Baby Zoo Animals

What a treat it is to visit a Zoo and get a peek at a newly-arrived baby animal - some so tiny you're lucky to catch a glimpse, others larger than many adult humans, but all of them too cute to resist. Here, we highlight some baby animals that were born in Zoos across the U.S. in 2012. read more »

Loved it

Had a wonderful trip to Southern California. The city pass was great, allowed a variety of attractions and was reasonably priced. Would definitely use it again.
