Fernbank Museum of Natural History
Kids and dinosaurs should be a combination that makes sense to any parent, but the Fernbank has a lot more going on. Things to see and do include:
- The world’s largest dinosaurs – Fernbank’s permanent exhibition Giants of the Mesozoic features the world’s largest meat-eater, Giganotosaurus, at 47 feet long with a six-foot skull and steak-knife- like teeth, and the largest of all dinosaurs, the 123-foot-long plant- eating Argentinosaurus, a long-necked dinosaur that is the equivalent in length of three school buses!
- Fossil floors – Fernbank’s floors are made of limestone tiles featuring fossils of sea creatures that lived over 150 million years ago. Kids can enjoy special activity sheets that help them locate, identify and trace the various fossils during their visit.
- The Children’s Discovery Rooms – These rooms are designed just for kids! Fantasy Forest gives preschoolers an introduction to natural history though activities that discuss camouflage shadows, wildlife, pollination, and more. Georgia Adventure is for kids ages 7-12 and reveals the many habitats and natural settings of Georgia through hands-on activities.
- Weekend Activities – Weekend Wonders is led by Fernbank educators and provides kids with crafts, stories and activities that follow a monthly theme. Story Telling is offered monthly (except in the summer) and features a professional story teller who entertains kids with tales about wildlife and cultures.
- The Fernbank Café – Fernbank offers a café with great dining options for adults and kids alike. Special kids’ meals come in a special dinosaur bag and include a special prize. Sensing Nature – this hands-on permanent exhibition lets visitors of all ages learn how their senses work to interpret their surroundings. Giant bubbles, spinning discs, magical mirrors and special listening domes show that our senses can sometimes work in unusual ways. At the end of the exhibition, a tornado, electricity ball and videos reveal how our senses work in combination to interpret the presence of thunder, lightning, wind, and other weather clues. Visitors then have the opportunity to deliver the weather forecast using green-screen technology.
- A Walk Through Time in Georgia – Out-of-town visitors will especially enjoy this permanent exhibition that journeys through the state’s diverse geologic regions on a voyage through the coast, swampland, mountains, valleys, caves, and more as each region’s fossil record reveals the story of the earth’s history, from the earliest organisms, to dinosaurs, giant ground sloths, and the first humans.
- The Museum Store – Kids always love a souvenir and Fernbank’s Museum Store offers a range of options starting at less than $1.
