If you’re in Manhattan this week, you’re getting a real blast of white Christmas. I understand getting snowed in or stuck in an airport. But if you have boots and a little time, go out and enjoy it, before the snow turns into dirty, plowed obstacles and ankle-deep slush:
• Walk into Central Park. You have to see it so still, so bright.
• Shopping smchmopping. Holiday windows are a New York triumph. My favorites are Bergdorf Goodman’s chic perfection and Simon Doonan’s witty Barneys’ windows (this year, Doonan’s takes on Saturday Night Live). Also fabulous: Bloomingdale’s, Saks, Lord & Taylor, Macy’s, Bulgari, and Tiffany.
• Central and sacred: Rockefeller Center’s skating rink is a midtown magnet, teeming with visitors and New Yorkers watching skaters. Across Fifth Avenue is St. Patrick’s Cathedral, beckoning with flickering votives and a faint whiff of sacramental incense .
• Grand Central terminal is spectacular. Grab a hot chocolate and pause to enjoy a celestial laser light show before heading back out into the snow zone.
Merry merry!
